Strong Readers Read Everyday!
During Reading Workshop the children are taught strategies that they need to become strong readers. It is the time of day when children have opportunities to orchestrate all they know about reading in order to be successful with their own books. Children will understand that reading is so much more than just decoding words. The big job of readers is to understand and follow the story. A great deal of our workshop time will be spent holding the students accountable for understanding stories and teaching fix-up strategies if comprehension is being lost.
Over the course of the year we will cover many units of study in our workshop. The units will offer insight on building good reading habits and developing fluency. We will study characters in a book and develop ideas about characters based on their behaviors and interactions. Will will learn how to use higher level thinking skills to grow ideas about texts through predicting and making connections. Other comprehension strategies we will cover include: visualizing, inferring, questioning and synthesizing. We will study fairy tales and folk tales by comparing versions of the stories and finding differences between two versions of the same tale. Our workshop will also include the important task of learning how to read nonfiction texts and how to determine importance in those books.
