Writers' Workshop
Writers' Workshop begins everyday with a mini-lesson, followed by independent practice and it concludes with a share. The workshop is supported by all of the word work and reading presented in other times during the day. Learning opportunities throughout our day enable students to progress as writers by practicing skills and strategies presented across the curriculum.
Our year as writers begins by establishing routines and procedures in the classroom. We move along to writing small moments stories followed by the writing of realistic fiction stories. We utilize mentor texts studying authors' craft and styles which we could emulate in our own writing. Once we complete revising our pieces we move along to nonfiction and content area writing. To finish the year we will practice opinion writing. All year the children use the skills they have acquired in reading to support their writing particularly in areas of exploring punctuation, using exact vocabulary to make their pieces concise and providing evidence to support their thinking as they write.
All of the components of our rich Language Arts Curriculum come together to support the children as proficient readers and writers.
