Frequently Asked Questions About Mrs. Demitriou's Class
How can I contact Mrs. Demitriou?
The best way to contact me is via email at [email protected]. If you do not have ample internet access, please send a note to school in your child's homework folder. Your child is responsible for emptying his/her folder. I must receive changes in pick-up in writing in order for your child to leave with another adult. This is for the safety of your child.
Will my child have homework?
Yes, the children will generally have homework Monday-Thursday. Homework will be posted each day in the Google classroom. Check the topic "Homework" under the classwork tab. Homework usually consists of a Math Home LInk Sheet as well as the recommended 20 minutes of reading nightly. Everyday your child may read with you, to you or enjoy you reading to them. I encourage discussions about the book your child is enjoying at home. In addition to asking specific questions about story events your child may want to share specific learning from a nonfiction book. You may also want to ask broader questions such as: what did the story remind you of, why do you think the author wrote the book, what do you think about the character's actions in the book, or what do you think ____ means in the book?
Do the children have snack in school?
Yes, the children will have a snack in school. Please send in a healthy snack and drink which your child can manage independently. Please separate the snack from the rest of your child's lunch.
Can my child celebrate his/her birthday in school?
We will acknowledge your child's birthday, but we can not have a party or share goody bags. Your child may only distribute party invitations if there is one for each child in the class.
Are there class parties?
We have 3 class parties each year which are predetermined by the grade level teachers. The class moms plan the events and distribute snacks according to the district guidelines. If your child is not pleased with the snacks which will be offered, please send in an additional snack on the day of the party so your child can enjoy the party with snacks of their own.
How is my child assessed?
There are ongoing assessments based on teacher observation as well as more formal assessments in areas such as: Math, Reading, Vocabulary, Phonics and Science. Ongoing and formal assessments are utilized to determine groupings in class, individual support needed or enrichment opportunities which may be afforded to your child.
